As I sit here trying to remember my former life as a pessimist, it is hard to think of examples or picture my negative mindset. It feels like it was 100 years ago or like maybe I am making it up and I was never actually like that. Now don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t a complete Debbie Downer. I’m fun as hell! And a lot of people out there would argue I already had my dream life. I had an amazing husband, a wonderful career, awesome friends and family and grew up pretty happy for the most part. But I do remember exactly when I changed to a positive mindset and started manifesting everything I wanted (and it’s a lot easier than you think!). It was only around 12 years ago, when I learned about the concept of the Law of Attraction and the power of positive thinking.
Don’t Focus On The Negative Things
My entire life, I always anticipated for bad things to happen and never trusted anyone other than myself. I just thought of myself as a realist. I’ve always felt intuitive, like a good judge of character and people’s real intentions. But I wasn’t just keeping it real; I was a pessimist. In reality, all that negative energy was probably just me having bad anxiety and other fun issues to unpack as an adult! And little did I know, I was probably attracting those worst-case-scenarios and making them come to fruition. The good news is that I stumbled upon a different way to live. I learned how to focus on all the good things and start living my best life.
How to start manifesting for beginners
I remember when all of that changed for me PERMANENTLY. My husband and I watched the documentary-ish movie, that was on Netflix or Amazon Prime at the time, called The Secret. It is based off the easy read book, The Secret, written by Rhonda Byrne. They both came out in 2006 and I heard about it for the first time on Oprah Winfrey’s show. It really did change the complete trajectory of our future and lifestyle. It’s about how our thoughts become our reality, regardless if they’re positive thoughts or negative. If you focus on what you want, you will get it and the same goes for when you focus on what you don’t want. It goes over all the manifestation techniques and examples of success stories. It’s the best law of attraction and manifesting books for beginners (definitely one of the most famous law of attraction beginners books).
What is Law of Attraction?
It’s a law. A universal principle we all follow without even realizing it. It’s no different than the law of gravity; if we throw something up, it must come down. It doesn’t care who we are, what we do, or where we are. It’s always happening. We are always creating. In simple terms, the Law of Attraction means like attracts like. If you persistently think negative thoughts, you will bring negative emotions and negative outcomes to yourself. If you persistently think positive thoughts, you will bring positive change and great things your way! Your thoughts determine your feelings, which determine your frequency, which determine your outcomes.
The Easy 3 Step Process
In The Secret, Byrne and her collaborators, teach you how to use law of attraction to start manifesting. They describe it as 3 step process: Ask, Believe, Receive. Sounds easy enough! You “ask” through your thoughts, by stating your “wants” out loud, or even writing it (you can call it your manifestation journal!). That’s the first step! Put your order out into the universe! The next step is to believe you already have it. For example, I remember when I was trying for a promotion. I would picture myself already having it, felt like I already had it, and jammed out in my car excitedly like I already had it! Guess what? I got fired. Totally kidding; I got the promotion! I did the same thing years later when I was going interviewing for a new job (got that one too!). That is the power of the law of attraction.
The Law of Attraction for Beginners: Tips and Tricks
Use expectation as a power tool
As I was writing this, I pretty much did it off the top of my head. Right before I submitted this blog post though, I figured I better check the book. I pulled out one my copies of The Secret to get an idea of how I wanted to order everything. While skimming the book, I came across something that I didn’t really think of as a separate technique. But, it really is (I literally wrote about it in one of my examples below). Expectation is powerful because it means you’re putting a strong conviction behind your thoughts and feelings; you’re expecting to receive new things or expecting for something to happen.
Gratitude for every aspect of your life
Truthfully, the most important part of The Secret was the messaging around gratitude. That shit right there was the most transformative and life changing. It just spoke to my husband and I so deeply. I immediately started to implement a hardcore gratitude list into my daily life. The morning after I watched it, I got up to take a shower and instantly started thinking about all the things I was grateful for. In my head, I listed so many things from the magnificent to the little things (e.g., I am so grateful that this shampoo bottle is not empty and that I remembered a towel.). The movie says that the more grateful you are, the more things you will get in your life to be grateful for. I truly believe, based off my own experiences, that it’s the most important step to getting the life you want.
Visualization, a daydreamer’s favorite tool
Who doesn’t love buying a lottery ticket when it’s over $900M and visualizing all the things you’d do as soon as you win? *”Hello? Boss? Yea, I quit! Byeeee!” Insert beach scene…bevvy in hand* I digress. There are scientific studies that prove visualization works due to the mind-body connection. Participants imagined themselves doing strength training exercises and that would equate to real life gains in their physical reality. Famous athletes use this trick as well, picturing themselves executing plays successfully. Our subconscious mind and body can’t tell the difference; and that’s how you still see positive outcomes even when your positive actions are only imagined. A great way to help you visualize your goals is by making a vision board. You can go through a bunch of magazines (how old school) and cut out pictures and words to glue on it, like you’re making your very own ransom letter!
Is the Law of Attraction Real?
I already instinctively knew deep down what we think about we bring about, which is the Law of Attraction. As I watched, it made total sense to me. I already had all the “proof” I needed that our thoughts and words become actual things and reality. In the moment, I was able to think of so many examples of how I had used “The Secret” or my family had used it without ever even knowing we were doing it.
- My dad was hit by a car years ago and it almost took off his leg entirely. The doctors all said he would never walk again. He was adamant that he would though, and he did!
- My parents dreamed of living on a particular road with beautiful land and trees. They would visualize themselves living there as they drove around that area on the weekends. Years later, they found a house with a very motivated seller that put it into their price range. They got their dream home.
- When I was a teenager, I would always talk about the kind of husband or relationship that I demanded for myself, that I deserved to be treated a certain way and that I wanted us to be best friends. My husband is everything I dreamed of because that is what I expected! I truly believe that.
Does the Law of Attraction Work?
When I got to work that first morning after watching it, this woman came up to me and said she has always thought I was so pretty. And she just felt the need to come to my desk and tell me. That legit made my whole freakin’ day! I don’t ever get random compliments about my looks (ok, from my grandma but that doesn’t count!). Coincidence? I didn’t think so. I was already like, “Holy shit. This really does work.”. So, a person just needs some positive energy and to be more grateful? Who knew?! Shortly after I started focusing on more positive things and constantly thinking about everything I was grateful for (literally, I would just think about how grateful I was for every little thing, for like 24 hours a day basically), I was attracting everything I wanted. I started to feel like I had magical powers.
Please join my cult
I was gushing about it to my family and close friends and explained they needed to watch it so their lives could be wonderful instantly too (Please click here to join my cult. Don’t be scared that it’s called “The Secret”.). It’d be so easy to write tons of blog posts about the thousands of amazing things, people, places, or money I’ve attracted into my life. We used to keep a list because it was just so crazy! How else would anyone believe us? You may want to use it to grow rich, get a new car, or get your dream job and have mind-blowing financial success (you thought I was going to say sex, didn’t you?). The universal laws of attraction don’t care what you ask for. The important thing to remember is you’ll manifest whatever you focus your energy on. So, don’t dwell on any negative experiences.
Now You Can Move On To Bigger and Better Things
If you watch The Secret, you’ll see it’s a little cheesy. Keep an open mind. Try to ignore the cheese as much as possible though (you won’t be able to, and you will laugh). It’s totally worth it though and you may even need to rewatch it every time you need a reminder or reset. At the present moment, I still have all my same mental health issues and ups and downs. And it doesn’t prevent you from having bad days. But it’s been the best way to get myself through negative emotions and remember that I’m the creator of my own reality. Beware though. You’ll become one of those optimists, just like I did. You’ll notice and be annoyed by all the negative and pessimistic people around you. Gah! You just can’t fathom how anyone could think like that (like that wasn’t you basically 20 minutes ago).
I bet you can of examples in your own life where you helped make something happen by focusing on it so much (good or bad)!
